Writtens will usually match the beat syllable per count. The easiest way to tell the difference is in how ordered the lyrics are. This caught on in a big way and eventually off the top became super popular in New York with artists like SuperNatural making huge strides. Primarily LA from crews like Freestyle Fellowship who implemented a improv Jazz style to lyrics. Off the top freestyles came from the West Coast. A lot of these cats would prewrite certain lines and memorize them. A way to mix and match lyrics to show off without spitting entire songs. Freestyle for them was spitting a written to a different beat or not intended for direct recording or a song.
Big L and a lot of New York cats at this time were spitting pre-writtens. I have experience with off the top freestyles.
